Just prior to the 2008 presidential election last November, Men’s Vogue commissioned renowned graphic designer Michael Bierut to create a politically neutral lapel pin – one that would provide a welcome alternative, for voters from all points along the political spectrum, to the much-vaunted and -vilified flag design. Bierut’s creation winds the letters in “USA” around one another, an allusion to the country’s history as a melting pot. The result is a distinctly modern design, more subtle than the ubiquitous flag, but every bit as red, white, and blue.
Bierut’s lapel pin is available on the Condé Nast Store in a limited edition of 5,000. Each pin is $10, and proceeds benefit Puppies Behind Bars, an organization through which prison inmates train dogs to become companions for Iraq and Afghanistan War veterans.
